Real time pictures taken from a working stove model. Notice the dark color of the damper in photo #1. This damper is not quite active yet, (active being not hot enough to keep up with the smoke and residue filtering through it). Photos 2-5 depicts the different stages the damper goes through heating up to become active. This takes about 5-10 minutes on a warm stove, (15-30 minutes when the stove is cold) in the open damper position, then the damper is closed. Once the damper reaches stage 5 it will maintain being active with a minimun amount of air going into the stove.
